Sayings is inspired by refugia; these are geographical areas of relative climatic stability where funga, fauna and flora may survive during continental climatic shifts and readjustments. The concept of a refugium inspires this space where diverse ways of thinking and writing about living and learning on a damaged planet cross paths.

Sayings attempts a blurring of boundaries guided by the ecopedagogical perspective that teaching and learning about the wonders and crises of our world cannot be isolated in distinct disciplines nor approached from a single perspective. Readers are invited to explore a variety of expressions, vocabularies, methodologies, and ideas as articulated through essays, fiction, conversations, poems, and academic articles.

Sayings attempts a study of meaning that honours diversity in tone, scope and discipline. Some texts are republished, and others are commissioned or written within this study’s framework. Some words can be shape-shifters moving across art, education, ecology, design, politics, philosophy, economics, and research practices. While other words or concepts may be lesser known or discussed and interpreted differently in other fields.

The category ‘Roots’ represents the foundational elements of this tentacular inquiry.
‘Easy Read’ are texts written in simpler language.
